Located on the California / Nevada border, Lake Tahoe is a popular destination for vacationers year round.
About two-thirds of Lake Tahoe's shoreline is in California and the lake has a maximum depth of 1,645 feet, making it the third deepest in North America. The lake flows into the Truckee River which goes to Reno then drains and evaporates into the Nevada desert's Pyramid Lake.
This basin was formed from block faulting 2 million years ago, where the earth's crust fractured and caused land to be pushed upward creating the Carson Range and Sierra Nevada with the Lake Tahoe Basin in between.
With 72 miles of shoreline, great ski resorts and a booming economy, Lake Tahoe is also a prime area for real estate.
