Recreational Activities in Lake Tahoe, CA

Lake Tahoe is a popular spot to enjoy the great outdoors. With its scenic beauty and year-round recreational opportunities, you can have a great time exploring the natural areas surrounding Lake Tahoe while breathing in some fresh mountain air.

The City of South Lake Tahoe Recreation and Swim Pool Complex is a wonderful spot to spend the day with your family outdoors. This park boasts picnic areas as well as outdoor basketball and volleyball courts, a crafts area, and a bathhouse with showers. There are also both indoor and outdoor swimming pools and a gym, making it the perfect location for recreation throughout the year.

The Tahoe State Recreation Area is a popular campground set against Jefferey pine and Ponderosa pine. The campsites are well equipped with metal food lockers, and some campsites offer great views from the lake-front. The Tahoe State Recreation Area also boasts unpaved hiking trails, mountain biking trails, areas for horseshoes and badminton, volleyball courts, and even a beach. With bears in the area, you'll want to keep your camera nearby so you can snap a few shots if you spot one in the distance.

At the Kirkwood Ski and Summer Resort, you will have year-round family fun set high in the Sierra Nevada Mountains. This popular ski resort is known for its fresh snowfall and gorgeous scenery with Lake Tahoe as a backdrop from many angles. The slopes allow both skiers and snowboarders, and are designed for everyone from the novice to the expert. You will love the variety of steeps, chutes, and bowls. In summer months, you can enjoy other activities like hiking, mountain biking, and sightseeing. The Meadowstone and the Mountain Club lodges are located here, making it a great destination for a relaxing getaway in the mountains.

The Tahoe City Golf Course was originally opened in 1917, and has grown in popularity over the years due to its unique use of the natural scenery and spectacular views of Lake Tahoe from many holes. This course was a favorite of the Rat Pack in the 1950s, and was a regular golfing spot for such icons as Bob Hope, Frank Sinatra, Bing Crosby, Dean Martin, and Sammy Davis, Jr. This is a public, nine-hole golf course with play from 7am until dusk during the fall and winter months, and from 6am until dusk from May through October. Cart rentals are available and encouraged.
