Located next to the South Lake Tahoe Chamber of Commerce, Lake Tahoe Museum, also known as the Lake Tahoe Historical Society Museum features artifacts from the Apache, Navajo, Seminole, Hopi and Zuni tribes. The museum has an outstanding collection of Wahoe Indian baskets, tomahowk heads, arrow heads and spear tips. The visitor will see a collection of photographs and maps on display dating back to the 1880s.
Other points of interest in South Lake Tahoe is the beautiful mountain lake itself, which is 22 miles long and 12 miles wide. The shoreline around the entire lake is 72 miles around. Lake Tahoe is the 3rd deepest lake in all of North America, being 1,645 feet at its deepest point. Though it is believed by many that Lake Tahoe was formed by volcanic action, it was actually formed by the shifting of geologic faults causing the rise and fall of the landscape.
If you plan to stay in the South Lake Tahoe area there are many hotels, motels and other travel lodges to choose from. The Pine Cone Acre Motel, the Best Tahoe West Inn, the Tahoe Valley Lodge, and Inn by the Tahoe are just a few. There are many good places to eat while in South Lake Tahoe; the Riva Grill on the Lake,
Evan's American Gourmet Cafe, the
Swiss Chalet Restaurant and the Naked Fish Sushi Restaurant are all a few minutes from the Lake Tahoe Museum.
Lake Tahoe Museum's hours of operation are from Memorial Day to Labor Day from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily, and from September to Memorial day weekends from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. There is a nominal admission fee to tour the museum.
